Police are at the scene of a crash involving a logging truck, an SUV and another vehicle on SH1 south of Hewletts Road, near Whangarei.
The driver of an SUV travelling south has spun out following an overtaking manoeuvre, and has hit a vehicle in the northbound lane.
The driver of the northbound lane vehicle is in a critical condition.
No other vehicle occupants appear to have injuries.
The weather conditions are very wet and driving is difficult. Motorists are asked to slow down and drive to the conditions.
The road is not closed, however it is currently down to one lane and the road is covered in debris.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible as there will be significant delays. The serious crash unit will be investigating.
