State Highway 1 south of Whangarei remains closed as Police investigate a serious crash this morning.
A 4-wheel drive and a truck-and-trailer have collided just south of the SH1/Maungakaramea Road intersection about 3.30am.
The driver of the 4-wheel drive is in hospital with serious injuries. The truck driver received minor injuries.
Diversions are in place around the crash site on SH1 at Maungakaramea Road to the north, and Mangapai Road to the south.
It's expected the road is likely to reopen around 7.30am.
