At approximately 6.50pm emergency services attended a serious crash near Twizel.
The crash occurred at the intersection of the Twizel-Omarama Road (State Highway 8) and McGaughtries Road.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police can confirm that two people have died at the scene of the crash.
5 other people have received moderate to serious injuries.
A Serious Crash Investigator will be attending the scene from Dunedin.
The road is closed and there are no detours in place. Police advise motorists to check the NZTA website for further updates.
There will be no further details released in relation to the crash tonight including any details about the deceased.
