Police remain in attendance at the crash which occured at about 5am this morning State Highway 1 near Clinton near the intersection with Fairview Road.
One vehicle was inovled in the crash and the driver has been flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter in a critical condition.
A diversion is in place at Old Lake ROad and Balikie Road. State Highway 1 is likely to be closed until 11am.
Police, Fire and Ambulance have attended from Balclutha and Clinton.
The Serious Crash Unit has arrived and are investigating the cause of the crash.
