Police acknowledge the sentencing today of Nabjett Singh in the Wellington District Court in relation to charges of using a document to obtain a pecuniary advantage and providing false information.
The sentence of two years and nine months prison reflects the seriousness of the offending committed by Singh while he was employed as an investigator with the Ministry of Social Development.
In relation to the offending Police successfully sought a forfeiture of property to the value of $263,956 which comprised the proceeds of the sale of a dwelling and bonus bonds.
“Mr Singh’s corrupt and dishonest behaviour whilst employed in a position of trust within a government ministry is exceedingly disappointing,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Murray of the Central Asset Recovery Unit.
“The Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act is highly effective with its purpose of recovering criminal proceeds. In this case Mr Singh misappropriated significant funds from the Ministry over a 12 year period and these funds have now been recovered by Police on behalf of the community”.
“The message is clear, if any persons attempt to profit from crime, they risk the loss of their assets,” Detective Senior Sergeant Murray warns.
The outcomes achieved in both investigations demonstrate that government agencies will work closely together to identify criminal activity and hold criminals to account.
