A search and rescue operation is underway for two male hunters in Southland.
The pair, in their early 20s, went into the south-eastern corner of Longwood Forest yesterday, off Centre Road at Waipango, and did not come out as expected last night.
They were not prepared for an overnight stay, and were wearing hunting clothing, with minimal food.
They had text family members last night to say they were lost and would camp out for the night, intending to walk out in the morning.
Police were made aware of the hunters’ plans late last night and were satisfied they were able to make themselves comfortable until morning.
In an attempt to locate the pair today, Police sounded the siren on the Police vehicle, and heard firearm shots in return.
This indicated a start point location, and Police Search and Rescue staff and eight LandSAR volunteers were making their way into the forest this evening.
The search is being run out of Invercargill Police Station, where LandSAR, Amataeur Radio Emergency Communication volunteers, and Police SAR coordinators are based.
Police appreciates the interest of the local hunting community in wanting to help search for the pair, but asks that people steer clear of the Cascade Road area of the Longwoods, to assist searchers.
