Wellington Police are reminding drivers to rest up if they are heading away this Labour weekend. Acting District Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Ian Martin says "Many people make plans to head away for the long weekend and we want everyone to make it back safely."
"The main state highways are traditionally busy from 3pm through to about 9pm on Friday as people head away. Then from about 2pm on Monday with heavy volumes on the roads as people head home.
"Motorists should anticipate more people on the roads at these times and make sure they've left themselves plenty of time to get home safely. Tired drivers are more likely to make mistakes and get frustrated so stop along the way and take a break."
For the holiday period Wellington Police will be enforcing the reduced speed tolerance and anyone who drives more than 4kph over the permanent posted speed limit is liable to be ticketed from 4pm on Friday through to 6am on Tuesday.
"Last year at Labour Weekend, fortunately there were no fatal crashes in the Wellington District and we want to make sure it stays that way this long weekend" added Senior Sergeant Martin.
"Police will be actively enforcing offences which contribute to serious and fatal crashes, such as not wearing seatbelts, cellphone use while driving, speed and alcohol impairment."
