Resources in place for on-going flood demands

1 min read

Wellington Police have assigned extra resource to the Kapiti, Porirua and Hutt Valley areas and are preparing for the afternoon and evening as further rain and a high tide is expected.

“We are continuing to work with NZ Transport Agency on road closures throughout the region and are providing assistance to areas that are under evacuation. We can assure the greater Wellington public that we have sufficient resources in place to meet current demands and urge the public to follow advice given by Wellington Region Emergency Management and the NZ Transport Agency” says Acting District Commander Paul Basham.

“Commuter and community safety is paramount. We are doing what we can to ensure those in flooded areas are safe and secure. It is reassuring that Wellington City is operating as per usual for any residents who are staying in the city this evening.”

“We have our specialist teams assisting with high risk areas and off duty staff have also volunteered their time to ensure the safety of residents and commuters”, Mr Basham says.

Police are also urging motorists to follow road directions and diversions put in place by Police and the NZTA which are there for their safety. Updates on road closures can be found at www.getprepared.org.nz.

We emphasise that motorists should avoid driving where possible. For all motorists needing to travel, please be patient, vigilant, and drive to the ever-changing conditions.

If you have concerns for your safety, please call 111 immediately.
