A 24 year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court tomorrow charged with the murder of a woman who was allegedly attacked while exercising on Shore Rd, Remuera, this morning.
The woman's body has been removed from the property where she was found by its residents and a post-mortem examination will get underway this evening.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper says the arrested man presented himself at Auckland Central Police Station shortly before midday and has been speaking with investigating officers since.
"We are confident he poses no further risk to other members of the public but are fully aware of the devastation this event will have on the victim's family, friends and the community in general.
"One of our main focuses at present is identifying the deceased and, through our own staff and the agencies we work alongside, wrapping support around her family at this tragic time.
"We now believe we know who she was and are in the process of formally notifying her next of kin.
"Staff have been at the scene where she was found since being called there by St John Ambulance service officers at about 10.50. Police have been canvassing residents in the area to try to get as much information about events or incidents leading up to her death."
Mr Hooper said the residents of the property where the victim was found were understandably distressed by today's events and have been assisted by Victim Support volunteers.
