Public's response to Police appeal helps investigation into house fire

1 min read

Canterbury Police would like to thank the members of the public who have come forward to provide information relating to the house fire at a Champion Street address which started at around 12.45am on Sunday (1 February 2015).

Detective Sergeant James Simpson says “Some of the witnesses we have interviewed have reported that fireworks were being set off outside the address prior to the fire starting.  These reports will form part of the ongoing Police investigation into the cause of the fire.  However it is too early in the investigation to establish whether or not the fire was deliberately lit.”

A scene examination by Fire Service and Police investigators was completed yesterday afternoon.

Canterbury Police will be interviewing a number of other people over the next few days.

If you were still at the party around the time the fire started, or you know someone who was, please contact Christchurch Police Station on 03 363 7400 as you may be able to provide information that will assist with the Police investigation.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Media please note – there will be a limited opportunity for telephone interviews to verbalise this release tomorrow morning.  Please text the District Communications Manager on 021 942 404 if you would like a time allocated for you.
