Protest at Kaitaia Airport

1 min read

More than 40 protestors occupied the Kaitaia Airport today disrupting flights to the Far North town.

About 11am the protestors made their way into the airport.. The protestors set up a makeshift camp around the grounds of the airport.

Two flights to and from the airport were disrupted by the protest. The first one left, but took no passengers and a flight due to arrive at 5pm didn’t leave Auckland as protestors threatened to block the runway.

Far North Area Commander Inspector Wendy Robilliard says there are three flights a day to and from Kaitaia and they often carry medical staff and supplies and patients.
“This protest has the potential to threaten the wellbeing of patients and other passengers should an emergency occur during an inbound flight.”

Police iwi liaison officers have been speaking with the protestors and the protest has been peaceful. Police will be monitoring the situation.

Media please note: There will be no further statements from Police tonight unless further information comes to hand.
