From Monday 18 June Porirua Police Station will have its front counter open to the public seven days a week, and will stay open an extra hour Monday to Friday.
The front counter is currently open to the public Monday-Friday 8am-6pm. From Monday it will be open 8-7pm on weekdays and 8-4pm on weekends.
Tracey Thompson, Area Commander for the Kapiti Mana Area says the extended opening hours are a result of the Front Counter Safety Review, parts of which involved ensuring that our front counters were a safe environment for our staff and for those coming into the station.
“We appreciate the public’s patience while this work was underway and are pleased to say we can now provide the opportunity for the public to come into the station on the weekends,” says Thompson.
“The extended operating days and hours will help facilitate community engagement with Police by providing a local face for longer hours.
“However, we would like to remind the public that Police remain available 24 hours a day seven days a week to respond to emergencies on 111.”
Porirua Mayor Mike Tana is delighted with the decision.
“I’m delighted that police have made this decision to go back to the front desk of the Porirua police station being open seven days,” says Tana.
“The police in our community do amazing work but the residents have been calling for the station to be manned, so they can call in if they need to.
“I applaud the decision – it will add to that sense of safety that our people want in their communities.”
