Shortly after 1pm this afternoon, a man armed with a nailgun entered the Kiwibank on Sunnynook Road, Sunnynook.
He pointed the nailgun at the teller and demanded money.
He then left the bank with a sum of money and fled. No-one was injured.
A staff member chased the offender and flagged down a passing motorist, who was driving on nearby Cockayne Avenue. The man and the good samaritan attempted to follow the offender as he ran away. They lost sight of him but several minutes later saw a man fitting the offender's description getting into a vehicle.
Police would like to speak to the driver who was flagged down and assisted, and are encouraging that person to get in touch.
Enquiries to locate the offender are continuing and he is described as the following;
-Male Maori or Pacific Islander.
-Aged in his 20's to 30's.
-Wearing black wrap-around sunglasses, a black hoody and a black puffer vest (sleeveless), dark pants and black sneakers with white trim.
