Police treat Thames man's death as suspicious

1 min read

A guard was in place at a Thames address overnight and a scene examination will commence this morning following the death of a man at Waikato Hospital after an alcohol related incident yesterday.

Acting Detective Inspector Ross McKay of the Waikato CIB said emergency services were called to the Queen St address about 4.30pm amid reports a 49-year-old man had collapsed.

"At this point investigators are working to piece together the sequence of events but initial indications are that four people had been drinking at the address for the majority of the day when a dispute broke out between a number of the parties.

"Our victim suffered trauma to the head and fell to the ground, unconscious. Attempts were made to revive the man however his condition was life threatening when medical staff arrived and he was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition."

Mr McKay said the man died in hospital a few hours later.

"A scene guard was in place overnight and a forensic examination will commence at the address shortly. A post-mortem examination to be carried out today is expected to give investigators a better idea on the cause of the man's death which, at his point in time, is being treated as suspicious."

"A male arrested at the address in relation to the alleged assault of two women will appear in the Hamilton District Court this morning and enquiries are continuing."
