The Organised and Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand (OFCANZ) has seized 19 Kilograms of ephedrine with a current estimated street value of in excess of $2 million dollars.
This amount of ephedrine which is a Class B controlled drug and a precursor to methamphetamine has the potential to produce approximately 12 Kilograms of methamphetamine with a street value of up to $12 million dollars.
Detectives from OFCANZ subsequently arrested one suspect during the termination of the operation which focused on the supply of ephedrine in the Auckland region.
On Thursday 11 February 2016, a 31 year old man - a Chinese national currently residing in Canada, appeared in the Auckland District Court charged with Possession of a Class B Controlled Drug for Supply.
The man returns to Court on Thursday 3 March 2016 where further charges are likely to follow.
OFCANZ Taskforce Leader, Detective Inspector Zane Hooper said the demand by people in our community for methamphetamine remains high. “The market for ephedrine is still very strong and we will continue to target organised criminal groups that supply ephedrine to methamphetamine manufacturers, a drug that is causing significant harm in our community.”
“Police are concerned with the growth of methamphetamine usage in the community and encourage anybody with an addiction to approach the community support groups available to them for assistance”.
“I would like to encourage anyone that wishes to pass on information to Police relating to drug dealing activity to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. This information will assist Police in targeting the drug suppliers and diminishing the harm methamphetamine is causing in our communities.
