1 min read

The Police Maritime Unit has co-ordinated the rescue of 10 people after five small yachts were struck by a southerly in Evans Bay.

Emergency services received a Mayday call just after midday.

Three of the vessels capsized and a number of people were in the water for about 10 minutes.

All were wearing wetsuits and lifejackets.

The Lady Elizabeth IV of the Wellington Police Maritime Unit responded.

A boat shadowing the yachts and other vessels in the harbour also responded.

Everyone was retrieved from the sea and safely taken to shore.

The yachts have been towed to shore.
