Canterbury Police can now name the back seat passenger who was confirmed deceased following a single vehicle crash into a power pole on O'Hallorans Road in Glentui at approximately 6.00pm last night (27 December 2014).
He was 25 year old Jamie Shane Webb from Christchurch.
The death has been referred to the coroner who will determine the cause of death.
The 19 year old female driver of the dark green hatchback which crashed was taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance along with the 20 year old male backseat passenger and the 19 year old man and 19 year old woman in the other vehicle, a ute. They were all treated for abrasions, minor cuts and electrical burns.
The 21 year old female front seat passenger of the crashed car was flown to Christchurch Hospital by Westpac Helicopter with extensive burns to her feet.
Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
A spokesperson from Jamie's family said "Jamie will be sadly missed by all of his friends and family. We are all understandably devastated to have lost Jamie in such tragic circumstances. We ask that the media respect our request for privacy while we come to terms with life without him and do not approach us for further comment. We intend to hold a private funeral for Jamie's friends and family and ask media to please not attend or approach mourners for comment."
Canterbury Police want every journey to be a safe journey. In the lead up to the new year we urge all road users to drive to the conditions, allow plenty of time for your trip, wear safety belts and avoid distractions while driving.
It was fortunate that no one else lost their life in this tragic crash and Canterbury Police urge all road users to take care when driving in the District and be aware of the hazards on and off the road.
