Central Region Police can confirm that they are investigating an assault on an inmate at Whanganui prison yesterday afternoon. Corrections staff found the inmate in his cell late yesterday afternoon and he was taken to Whanganui Hospital for treatment.
Detective Inspector Ross McKay, Manawatu Field Crime Manager says “A male inmate at Whanganui prison has been assaulted and has been transferred to Wellington Hospital for specialist care.
Police have launched an inquiry and are currently interviewing witnesses to establish what has occurred.”
Police are working with Corrections staff and have no further statement at this time.
