Police and emergency services responded to a crash on Te Puna Station Rd around 12.30am where two cars have collided.
Unfortunately a woman in her 40's has died as a result of the crash and her death has been referred to the Coroner.
The driver of the other car was taken to hospital as a precaution. Neither car had any passengers.
The Serious Crash Unit are investigating. Police are working with the family of the deceased woman and are not in a position to release her name at this stage.
Police's thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.
