Police disappointed with results of checkpoints over the weekend

1 min read

Police are disappointed with the results of a combination of high profile checkpoints and random stops over the past weekend in the Invercargill Area.

As a result of these stops, 14 people have been apprehended for driving under the influence.

“As we come into the festive season, we know people are attending parties and celebrations. We want to see everyone get home safe this Christmas and  it’s extremely disappointing that people are driving under the influence ,” says Acting Southland Area Road Policing Manager, Sergeant Deon McNaught.

One driver apprehended by Police at 8:00am on Friday Morning had a recorded  breath alcohol level nearly three times over the legal limit.

“This individual was driving to work after celebrating his Christmas work drinks the night before.

“Alcohol takes a long time to get out of your system, and you have to be aware that you may still be over the limit the next day and not adequately rested. Consider delaying your drive, take alternative transport, or ask a friend to drive you.”

Police will be continuing a strong focus in regards to alcohol and drink driving leading up to Christmas and through the New Year Holiday period.

“Police will be out in force through the holiday period  in the Southland and Central Lakes Regions conducting breath testing checkpoints and random stops. Just remember, if you have  any doubt at all about being legally safe to drive – don’t take the risk.

Make safe travel plans before you start drinking and stick to them. Plans made during or after drinking are likely to lack good judgement. Keep yourself and your mates safe.”
