Manawatü Police have launched an investigation after the sexual violation of a 20-year-old woman in the early hours of this morning in Palmerston North.
At approximately 2am a man entered a Linton Street property through an unsecured window and sexually violated the woman in her bedroom. The woman has managed to fight off the offender and after the altercation he has left the property. She then reported the incident to Police and officers attended the scene.
Acting Detective Inspector Neil Forlong, Central District Field Crime Manager: says: "The victim has understandably been left shaken and distressed after the incident and we are supporting her, and have offered her the services of Victim Support."
"Officers are currently speaking to others who reside at the property and are also in the process of conducting an area canvass."
A scene examination at the property is underway and is expected to be completed by this afternoon.
"Priorities for us over the next 24-48 hours will be to take a formal statement from the victim, and continue with our area inquiries, as well as increasing patrols in the wider Central areas of the city."
Details are still being gathered in an effort to release a description of the offender in the coming days.
"I also want to take this opportunity to remind people to secure their windows and lock their doors. We have had some hot days lately and there is no sign of the temperature cooling down. If you are going to sleep with your windows open make sure you install some security stays.
"We are committed to identifying and locating whoever is responsible for this incident and the public can also help us by being vigilant and keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity in their community.
"If anyone saw a male acting suspiciously in the Linton Street area between 1am and 3am this morning, or knows something about this incident please contact Police," says Acting Detective Inspector Forlong.
