Manawatu Police and members of the Police's National Dive Squad have commenced a search of the Whanganui River in relation to the disappearance of Whanganui man, Whetu Hansen. A homicide investigation was launched in December 2013 following Mr Hansen’s disappearance.
Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison said Police are being assisted in their search by staff from the Royal New Zealand Navy.
“We are unable to comment at this stage on what exactly we are looking for in the Whanganui River or why we have determined that a search of the river is necessary for the purpose of this investigation,” Mr Harrison said. “Police are very grateful for the support provided by the Royal New Zealand Navy during the course of this operation,”
Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison said Police are also seeking more assistance from the public in relation to Mr Hansen’s disappearance.
“The investigation team would like to hear from anyone that saw a 1996 white Ford Courier ute, similar to the vehicle depicted in the attached photograph, in the Palmerston North or Whanganui area on Wednesday 4 December 2013,” Mr Harrison said.
“I would encourage anyone that has any information about this vehicle or the death of Whetu Hansen to contact their local Police Station or Detective Dave Wilson of the investigation team on 06 213 9595. '
