Police and agencies disappointed with alcohol operation in Tararua District

Please attribute to Senior Constable Karl Williams, Alcohol Harm Prevention Officer Tararua.

On Friday 14 October 2016 Police, Tararua Council Licensing Inspectors, and Public Health representatives, conducted a Controlled Purchase Operation (CPO) within the Tararua district, targeting On and Off licenced premises.

Two volunteers aged between 16 and 18 visited licensed premises and attempted to purchase alcohol.

The premises visited included bottle stores and bars in Pahiatua, Eketahuna,  Dannevirke and Woodville.

A total of 17 premises were visited, of which three failed by selling alcohol to the volunteers.  At two of the premises, the volunteers were sold alcohol even after showing their correct I.D. At the third premises, no I.D was asked for.

“All agencies are disappointed with the results, given that some of the premises checked had sold alcohol to underage people without even asking for I.D.  Our focus that we have on preventing and reducing alcohol-related harm in the community, particularly among vulnerable young people, will continue with further operations planned. said Senior Constable Williams.”

The failures will be fully investigated before any potential further action is considered through either the District Court or the Alcohol Regulatory Licencing Authority.

Controlled Purchase Operations (CPOs) are used in conjunction with licence compliance checks to ensure licensed premises and certified managers are operating within their legal responsibilities.
