NZ Police Commissioner Mike Bush wishes to announce that the Brazil Federal Police have escaped prisoner Phillip Smith in their custody.
The NZ Police liaison officer in Brazil has visited Mr Smith and has confirmed his identity.
Mr Bush says the news of his capture will come as a relief to New Zealand and to Mr Smith's victims. Mr Bush also thanks the Brazil Police, Interpol, and the NZ Police investigation team for their excellent cooperation in this international manhunt.
