Palmerston North agencies disappointed with CPO result

1 min read

Please attribute to Sergeant Brendon Gerrish, Alcohol Harm Prevention Officer Manawatu:

On Saturday 9 July 2016 Police, Palmerston North City Council Licensing Inspectors, and Health representatives, conducted a Controlled Purchase Operation (CPO) within Palmerston North targeting club licences.

Two volunteers aged between 16 and 18 visited club licensed premises and attempted to purchase alcohol. The premises visited included RSA’s and Sports Clubs.

A total of eight premises were visited, of which four failed by selling alcohol to the volunteer.

All agencies are disappointed with the results, given that half of the clubs checked had sold alcohol to underage people, and the focus that we have on preventing and reducing alcohol-related harm in the community, particularly among vulnerable young people.

The failures will be fully investigated before any potential further action is considered.

CPOs are used in conjunction with licence compliance checks to ensure licensed premises and certified managers are operating within their legal responsibilities.
