Police have now completed a criminal investigation into an incident in August where a video depicted an officer using force to remove a teenager from his bike.

Police were called to the scene on Savill Drive and Alderman Place, Mangere after receiving multiple calls about a group of youths acting in a disorderly manner.

The reports were of excessive noise, alleged fighting and cyclists weaving in and out of traffic which caused fear for their safety. Upon police arrival, the officers asked the youths to turn off their music and to leave the area. This is when the incident has taken place.

Upper North Professional Conduct Manager Inspector Tracy Phillips says police took this matter very seriously and carried out a thorough criminal investigation.

“In-line with what the victim’s family wanted, it has been decided the officer will not face any criminal charges. He will meet with the victim and his family to offer an apology.”

Police and the victim’s family did consider his excellent conduct in his over three years with police when coming to this decision.

The victim’s family have asked media to respect their privacy and do not wish to be contacted.

They have also asked for police to relay the message that they are happy with the process that has taken place and the decision not to charge the officer.

An employment investigation will now be commenced however this will remain a matter between the employee and employer and is subject to privacy.
