Otago Lakes Central Police are trying to identify an owner for this vehicle, which was recovered earlier this month when a number of people using it were arrested in relation to a burglary in Palmerston, Central Otago.
An examination of the vehicle has identified that the engine number has been partially destroyed, while the Vehicle identification Number (VIN) appears to have been cut out and replaced with a legitimate vehicle identity plate.
Detective Alan Lee of the Wanaka Police says an assessment of all reported unlawful takings of Toyota Hiluxes across the South Island since January 2015 has been unsuccessful in identifying an occurrence that matched this vehicle, and Police is seeking the help of the public with finding an owner.
An expert has identified the body as a Toyota Hilux from between 1996–2003, and while the wheels are a distinctive addition, it is not known when they were placed on the vehicle.
“Someone will recognise this vehicle, and we would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist us with reuniting it with its rightful owner,” Detective Lee said.
Anyone with information can contact Detective Lee at the Wanaka Police station on (03) 443 7272 or alan.lee@police.govt.nz
