One fatality following serious crash south of Timaru

Canterbury Police can name the person who died at the scene following a serious crash at approximately 3.30pm yesterday afternoon. She was 80 year old Shona McDougall from Timaru.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.  Shona's family are very upset and are being supported by Canterbury Police and Victim Support.

Her family do not wish to make any comment at this time and request privacy while they make contact with their extended family.

Sergeant Nerida Manso says "Police understand that the Ford Focus Shona was driving was travelling west on Scarborough Road prior to the crash.   The crash occurred at the stop-controlled intersection with SH1 when her car collided with a south-bound Ford Courier Utility"

The driver and sole occupant of the Ford Courier was treated at the scene.  The front seat passenger of the Ford Focus was taken to Timaru Hospital where he is being treated for moderate injuries.

Canterbury Police investigations are continuing.

SH1 was reopened at about 7.30pm last night after Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit had completed a scene examination and the area had been cleared.
