Canterbury Police can confirm that there has been one fatality following a two vehicle crash on SH73 West Coast Rd a short distance west of the intersection with Miners Rd shortly after 7.30am this morning (19 March 2015). The 64 year old driver and sole occupant of the red Mazda Eunos was confirmed as deceased at the scene.
The death has been referred to the Coroner. No further details of the deceased man will be released until the process to inform next of kin has been completed.
Witnesses report that the Mazda and silver Nissan Sunny have collided as the Mazda attempted to perform a u-turn. Both vehicles were west-bound prior to the crash. The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
Canterbury Police investigations into the cause crash are continuing.
SH73 has reopened. Canterbury Police would like to thank the public for their patience while the road was closed and diversions were in place.
