Police working on Operation Shakespeare, the homicide investigation into the murder of Lee Rata, made a number of arrests yesterday.
Mr Rata died in Whangarei Hospital on New Year’s Day from injuries received after an assault in Kaitaia on New Year’s Eve.
The assault happened in Bonnett Road, Kaitaia, around 11pm on New Year’s Eve.
Several addresses in Moerewa were searched as a result.
All people who have been arrested are members or associates of the Mongrel Mob.
They will be appearing in the Kaikohe District Court today on a number of charges including murder, party to murder and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
“We have been receiving great assistance from the public who have supplied information that has been crucial in achieving today’s results. The investigation team has been working tirelessly to see these people are held to account," said Detective Inspector Kevin Burke.
“I believe that many reluctant witnesses who were in fear of reprisals from gang members will now have the confidence to come forward,” said Detective Inspector Burke.
Community representatives are relieved that those responsible are being arrested and have expressed a desire that anyone knowing anything about what has occurred on the night and afterwards to contact Police.
Anyone who may have any information in relation to the investigation can contact Kaitaia Police on 09 408 6500. Alternatively, if you wish to pass information anonymously please contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
