At the request of Police, the Defence Force has carried out a controlled explosion on part of what is believed to be an historic military artillery shell.

It was found in Otago Harbour a few days ago by a worker connected to the dredging of the shipping channel.

The person who found it did the right thing by calling Police and telling officers about it.

Police sent photographs of the device to the Defence Force to assist in assessing the shell.

On Sunday a controlled explosion of the device was carried out.

The head of the shell is thought to be more than 100 years old, and may have been used in coastal defences.
