Media advsiory and photo opportunity: Armed Offenders Squad 50th Anniversary this weekend

When four police officers and a civilian were killed by armed offenders in early 1963, the tragedies became the spark for sweeping changes to the way Police were to deal with all future armed incidents.

 

In early August 1964, those changes saw the formation of the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS). On Saturday 9 August 2014, the AOS will mark 50 years of service with a free public event at the Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC).

 

 

EVENT DETAILS

 

What

Free public event to commemorate 50 years of the AOS, featuring live demonstrations of equipment and tactics, static displays and museum exhibition showcasing significant milestones and exhibits. Current and former AOS members will be attending.

 

Where

RNZPC, Papakowhai Road, Porirua. (Note limited media parking is available outside the college main reception area, so please RSVP to confirm your space).

 

When

12.30–1pm: Gates open to media. Note suitable media ID must be shown on arrival at the gate. Parking is outside the main reception area where you will be met and accreditation (lanyards) provided. (Note food and coffee can be purchased on site).

 

Static displays will be on show and the museum is open until 5pm.

 

 

1.30pm: Gates open to public.

 

 

2pm–3.30pm: Police dog and AOS display, featuring staff deploying from helicopter (weather permitting).

 

 

3.30pm: Public event concludes.
