National title holders will be known when the 49th Police Dog and Detector Dog Championships wrap up with the prizegiving ceremony in Trentham this afternoon.
It’s been intense competition across three categories since Monday for the 21 operational dog teams from NZ Police, Customs, Corrections, NZ Defence Force and Aviation Security, selected after regional trials.
Taking part in the Police Patrol Dog competition are 11 operational teams from Tāmaki Makaurau, Hamilton, Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui, Wellington, Blenheim and Christchurch.
Six narcotic detector dog teams are also competing – two from Police (Northland and Tāmaki Makaurau), and two each from Customs and Corrections.
Two explosives detector dog teams from NZ Defence and two from Aviation Security are also competing in their category.
