Police have released security camera images of a man wanted in connection with an attempted robbery at a New Brighton dairy on Saturday.
A man went into the Bower Ave Dairy just before 9am on Saturday, and handed the male shop manager a note demanding cash and cigarettes, and threatening to shoot him if he didn't comply.
Constable Tony Hickland says the manager then said 'just shoot me anyway' or words to that effect. "At that point the offender said 'ok - I'm going to get my gun' and walked out of the store," he says.
"He left without taking anything and did not return".
Constable Hickland says the man is described is a Maori aged in his 30s, around 175cm (5ft 9in) tall, of slim build with long dreadlocks.
He was wearing a distinctive red hoodie with white writing on one side and large white writing on the back, dark pants, sunglasses and carrying a black backpack.
"It is possible the offender had been hanging around the store before it opened, so someone may have seen him then, or as he left the store.
"If anyone saw this man, or can help us identify and locate him, we ask them to contact Police."
