Man shot in Paeroa UPDATE 1

Police are still working to build a full picture of events that unfolded in Paeroa this morning.

We can confirm a man has died after Police fired a shot.

It follows Police being called to a private address on County Road just after 8 o’clock.

Officers were responding to reports of an individual being threatened with a machete.

The male allegedly threatened Police with the weapon and Police fired a shot.

The 57-year-old man was local and known to Police.

Police immediately provided first aid to the man. An ambulance was also called. However, the man was later declared deceased.

Police have cordoned off the scene and will be conducting a thorough investigation.

The family of the dead man is being provided with the support they need. The officers involved are also being supported.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised.

Note to media: Acting Assistant Commissioner Bruce Bird will hold a stand-up at Paeroa Police Station at 1pm.
