Greymouth Police are investigating an incident in which a local man was hit by a steam locomotive shortly before 6pm on Saturday.
The man was one of a number of bystanders watching the locomotive which was enroute from Christchurch to the West Coast.
It is believed the man was taking photos of the locomotive in the Dunganville area when he was struck.
He was taken to hospital with serious head and leg injuries and later died.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
