Queenstown Police are currently responding to the death a 58 year-old man after an avalanche near the Devil's Staircase at around 2.45pm today.
The man was initially recovered from the avalanche debris, however he has died a short time later.
At this stage, the cause of his death is unknown and it has been referred to the coroner.
Police are now working to advise the next of kin. No further details are available at this time.
