Man arrested after assault in Greymouth

A 48-year-old man appeared in the Greymouth District Court today charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after an incident in the town on 31 December.

The man has been remanded in custody by consent to appear in the Christchurch District Court on 6 January 2016.

The 59-year-old male victim received serious head injuries and is now in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Woodley, West Coast criminal investigations manager, said inquiries are continuing into the assault which happened during a social gathering at a house.

Police will not be commenting further as the case is now before the court.
