More than 100 Police will crack down on dangerous driving in Auckland city on Thursday in a major prevention and enforcement road safety operation.
Drivers using mobile phones, not wearing seat belts, running red lights, speeding, or driving drunk or drugged are among those who can expect to be targeted.
“Anyone driving dangerously can expect to be stopped anytime, anywhere. Our message to motorists is to think twice before you put yourself or others on the roads at risk,” says Sergeant Tony Field, officer in charge of Thursday’s Operation.
Police staff will be spread throughout high risk locations in the city, focusing on intersections and “crime corridors” where crimes are committed by people as they travel through the city.
From 7am till late, checkpoints, cameras and breath testing are among the tools Police will use, including checks in areas where a higher number of children can be checked for adequate restraints.
“Last year 92 deaths were associated with non-restraint use and that’s 92 too many. Wearing your seatbelt is such an easy thing to do and they save lives – it’s that simple,” says Sergeant Field.
“We’re committed to reducing road trauma and crashes in our city and an effective way of doing this is through prevention, education and enforcement.”
