CRAVES

Over the past few days, a number of garages have been targeted by thieves in the Hutt Valley.

While you might be comfortable in your home, feet up, watching The Block, opportunistic thieves are capitalising on your distraction. They're stealing your bike from the garage you forgot to lock, smashing your car window to grab that gym bag you left sitting on the back seat and casually strolling off with the lawn mower that you planned to use this weekend.

Newly appointed Hutt Valley Prevention Co-ordinator, Acting Senior Sergeant Caroline Martin says the message is simple - Lock it or Lose it!

"We're noticing an increase in all types of thefts and burglary across the Hutt Valley area", says Snr Sgt Martin.

"There are some basic steps people can take to help protect their property. Lock your car while it's in the garage and take the keys inside with you. Make sure you lock the garage too.

"If you have to leave a car in the open make sure it's locked and take all valuables with you. Consider installing a car alarm or using a steering wheel lock.

"During the day make sure all your windows are shut and every door locked. Don't leave a hidden spare key out. Thieves are pretty good at hide and seek," says Snr Sgt Martin.

Hutt Valley Police ask that people keep an eye out for each other.

"If you see something suspicious, the most important thing is to keep yourself safe. If you are able to, note down a licence plate, get a good description of the person and any vehicle details that can then be given to Police. If you see a theft in progress call 111 straight away," says Snr Sgt Martin

Hutt Valley Police has joined forces with Hutt City Council to help remind people to be protective of their property. The CRAVES campaign tells people what thieves are looking for: Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable, Saleable
