Canterbury Police are reminding motorists to relax and enjoy a well-planned journey when heading away this holiday period.

Each year there are spikes in traffic volumes along State Highway 1, and the alternative route on State Highway 7 (Lewis Pass Highway) is expected to bring the same challenges as previous years and possibly more.

Attached are two images indicating the predicted traffic volumes, by individual day and by time of day, on the highway over the upcoming holiday period.

“We’re asking motorists to be considerate of these peak times and to plan their holiday journey to make it as stress free as possible,” says Senior Sergeant Philip Dean.

“A stressful journey causes more fatigue and fatigue can be fatal.”

“Consider the journey as part of your holiday, not just a day to get somewhere as quickly as possible,” says Mr Dean.

“Take a cricket bat and a picnic, and enjoy a long break at a park along the way.”

The attached ‘Image 1’ provides an indication of the busiest days to travel on the alternative state highway based on information over the last three summers.

‘Image 2’ shows the busiest time of day and is based on data observed since the earthquake on November 14th 2016.

“During those busy periods, motorists will need to be even more patient on the roads, pay extra care with following distances and keep within your own lane," says Mr Dean.

“Particularly on the alternative state highway, the road may be unfamiliar and it is a longer, more tiring journey.”

The busiest period for Lewis Pass Highway is generally noon until 2pm while St Arnaud is at its busiest from 2pm until 4pm.

“We’re not necessarily saying avoid the busy times, but be prepared and plan well. Allow plenty of time for your journey, drive in well-lit conditions and ensure you are rested and well fed.”

“And always remember the basics - watch your speed, buckle up, and don't consume alcohol before a drive.”
