Large scrub fire in Hawke's Bay

1 min read

Fire crews from around Hawke’s Bay are currently dealing with a large scrub fire in a rural area on the outskirts of Napier at Poraiti.

The fire was reported at around 1.30pm.  Station crews from Napier and Hastings are currently in attendance along with volunteer crews from Taradale, Central Hawke’s Bay, Bay View and Haumoana.

Regional fire commander Chris Nicholl said firefighters had the fire under control.

Three helicopters have begun dumping water on the fire that appears to be spreading up a hillside on Oak Rd, opposite the Park Island turn-off on Prebensen Drive.

Traffic is being stopped at Prebensen Drive and Church Rd and motorists are asked to take alternative routes.  The public is being urged to stay away from the area.

Mr Nicholl said smoke from the fire was drifting over some Napier suburbs and the central city.

“If you feel the smoke is becoming a hazard, stay inside your house and close all the doors and windows,” he said.

There have been no evacuations of properties in the area at this stage.  Residents in the area have been contacted.
