A complex case requiring the interviewing of a large number of people and the completion of extensive forensic examinations is how the officer in charge of the investigation into Tuesday's Police shooting at Kerepëhi describes his team's inquiry.
The independent senior investigator overseeing the case, Detective Inspector Mark Loper, said around 20 officers from across the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Counties Manukau Police Districts are involved in the investigation.
"The 50-year-old Kerepëhi man wounded on SH2 during Tuesday night's incident is yet to be formally interviewed by detectives and is expected to undergo further surgery in Waikato Hospital today.
"A large number of Police staff and members of the public continue to be spoken to by investigators and these interviews are expected to continue through to the end of next week."
Mr Loper said significant forensic examinations are also still underway including an examination of the offender's car which will continue later today.
"Following media coverage of us wanting to speak to drivers who may have been turned away from the scene on SH2 about the time of the shooting we have spoken to one motorist but we would like to speak to anyone else who may have seen or heard what occurred.
"While we have gathered a large amount of information from our own staff and other parties involved in the incident, independent witnesses offer real value to investigators piecing together exactly what happened."
