Canterbury Police would like those attending events during Cup and Show Week to pick up the reins of responsibility, ensuring they keep themselves and others safe.
Racing starts tomorrow [Tuesday] and continues all week. Police encourage everyone heading to the races to think about their transport options in advance.
“We want people to have a great day out. We also want people to get home safely. Plan to take public transport, organise a ride home or have a nominated sober driver if you’re going to be drinking,” says Senior Sergeant Kelly Larsen, Canterbury Road Policing.
She says extra staff will be on duty during the week with a view to minimising alcohol-related harm.
“We are all responsible for keeping our roads safe. Drink in moderation and make smart decisions about how you're going to travel. Look after your friends as well - especially those who might have had too much to drink."
Road policing staff will be stopping motorists and ensuring drivers are within the legal alcohol limits. Event-goers need to expect Police to be stopping drivers “anywhere, at any time, in any place,” Senior Sergeant Larsen says.
It’s also important to look after your belongings, minimising chances for opportunistic thieves and vandals. Look after your bags, keep hold of your valuables and if you do drive, ensure nothing is left visible in your vehicle that could be a target for thieves.
“Cup and Show Week is arguably the biggest event in Canterbury's social calendar. Police want people to enjoy themselves and to remember their celebrations for the right reasons,” Senior Sergeant Larsen says.
“Please make sure you look after yourselves and take care of each other.”
