Investigation into death of teenager

Eastern Bay of Plenty Police are investigating the death of a teenager in Opotiki.

At approximately 3.45am (Sunday, 26 July), emergency services were called to Goring Street, Opotiki.

At this stage it appears a 14-year-old local female has been struck by a vehicle, however inquiries are continuing to confirm exactly what has occurred.

The girl was treated by ambulance staff, but tragically died on route to hospital.

Police are looking to identify the vehicle believed to be involved in this incident and appeal to the driver of this vehicle to come forward.

In the meantime Police are working to establish the movements of the girl last night and early this morning. It is believed she had been at a family member's address which she had left prior to the incident.

A post mortem examination will take place and no further details about the teenager will be released until Police are satisfied all relevant next of kin have been informed.
