Police are working on a serious crash scene this morning at George Bolt Memorial Drive near Montgomerie Road where diversions are expected to be in place until at least 9:30am, causing disruption to airport commuters.
At about 2:00am on 27 September 2013 two vehicles were involved in a crash at the intersection of George Bolt Memorial Drive and Montgomerie Ave. One of the vehicles was a taxi with two passengers and the other vehicle a car containing five people.
All of the people involved have been taken to hospital. Seven have moderate injuries and one is in intensive care with serious head injuries.
The car with five people in it had left a nearby bar (Toby Jug Inn) minutes before the crash. The man who is currently in intensive car was involved in an incident before he left the bar. Police are working to determine if his injuries were a result of this incident or of the crash.
Alcohol is thought to be a factor in the crash. Serious Crash investigators are at the scene to determine the cause of the crash and any other aggravating factors. It is not known whether any of the people involved were wearing restraints.
The northbound lane on George Bolt Memorial Drive is open and the southbound lane will be open as soon as possible. Police advise motorists to take an alternative route to the airport such as SH20 Puhinui Drive.
