Fatal Road Crash at Matapihi, Tauranga – Western Bay of Plenty
Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene of a fatal road crash in Matapihi, Tauranga in the western Bay of Plenty.
The crash occurred at approximately 1.20pm today (Saturday 16/04/16).
The incident involved a 4x4 utility and a 5 year old girl riding a bicycle. The scene is the intersection of Matapihi and Waikari roads.
The driver of the 4x4 attempted to assist the child but she died of her injuries at the scene.
No details of the deceased childs name are yet available.
The Police Serious Crash Unit is in attendance. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. This will involve a scene examination, interview of witnesses and vehicle examination. The cause of the crash will not be known until the investigation has been completed.
The road is currently closed and will remain so for several hours.
