Police and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal crash on State Highway 20 (SH20), also known as the South Western Motorway, between the Dominion Road on-ramp and the Hillsborough Road off-ramp.
At this location a commercial rubbish truck, travelling South, has lost control and rolled a number of times causing a significant amount of debri to be spread over both the North and South bound lanes.
As a result of the crash SH20 is closed to all traffic in both directions from Hillsborough Road to Dominion Road. It is expected that the motorway could be closed until 9pm tonight.
The closure is expected to cause significant traffic delays as the peak flow traffic period approaches, motorists are urged to either delay travel or seek alternate routes. (Motorists intending to travel to Auckland Airport need to be especially aware of extended travel times.)
The truck driver is the single fatality from the crash, no personal details will be released in respect of the deceased until family members have been advised.
Police Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit will investigate the crash.
Further updates will be provided when information is known.
