At about 4.00pm this afternoon, emergency services were called to the scene of a serious crash at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Williamson Line, near Marton.
At this stage it appears two vehicles have had a head on crash. One vehicle, a blue Holden, was towing a trailer and had five occupants and the other, a silver Mazda, had two.
Both vehicles have been extensively damaged. The two occupants of the Mazda were taken by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter to Palmerston North Hospital, one with critical injuries.
Two of the occupants of the Holden have died at the scene and three others have been taken to Palmerston North Hospital with moderate injuries.
The deceased have yet to be formally identified and this will be a priority for Police so the next of kin can be informed.
A third vehicle, a white van, may have been involved. Police would like to speak to the driver of this van.
The Police Serious Crash Unit will be investigating.
This crash is an absolute tragedy and Police urge drivers to drive with care to ensure they arrive safe wherever their destination may be.
