Fatal crash north of Taumarunui

A man in his late 20s is dead after the tractor he was driving ended up down a bank and came to rest on railway tracks north of Taumarunui this morning.

The crash happened around 10am on Ongarue-Waimiha Road near the outskirts of the Ongarue village.

The man was towing a haymaking implement when the crash happened. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and the man was pronounced dead upon ambulance and police staff attending the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit and the Taumarunui Police are continuing to investigate the crash. The railway tracks are closed until a scene examination is completed.

Police will not release any further details about the man until his next of kin has been informed.
